Can’t figure out how it works. Much too complicated for a 10 yr old and his Mom!

When my jetjat live-w finally arrived; it was missing the 2.4 ghz – 4 channel dedicated controller which the box & Amazon web page claims is included with the drone purchase. I contacted them thru Amazon, alerting them to the fact they forgot to ship me the controller, and quickly got a reply that said a controller would be sent to me.

7 days later I got a message from Mota saying that no controller is available, and I must use the smart phone app to control the drone, so that’s what I did. I downloaded the app onto my android phone, and could now finally try out this drone. The battery only fits in the compartment one way, which is OK, but with the battery connected to the drone there is just no way to close the little door to the battery compartment. There just is not enough room for the battery AND wires to fit inside and put the door back on so I had to use electricians tape to prevent the battery from falling out in flight!

It’s worth noting that the lighting on this drone is backwards from the majority of them, that is to say the red lights are up front and the blue lights are in the back, a really good way to get a drone in the face if you are accustomed to the lights being correct!! Just another thing that ain’t quite right about this drone. The smart phone app does give you basic control over the drone, but NOT the fine tuning adjustments needed for proper flight. The trim controls are maxed out in the software & cannot be adjusted by the smart phone app! It also needs to be calibrated with the drone on a level surface, and there is no way to do THAT with the smart phone app either. Because of this; the drone flys kinda crooked requiring you to constantly over-correct for it. Flying outside I discovered that the range is really limited, being dramatically less than most drones in this class, 20 to 25 meters at the very best, any farther and it’s beyond the range of the cell phone app.

Contrary to advertised claims, this drone does NOT do so well even with a little wind. It burns battery time making any headway even in a gentile breeze & could possibly go off course, crashing into people, pets and other stuff. Every time a slight breeze came up, there went the drone, gone with the wind! At least you get a good cardio workout chasing it down when the wind takes it out of range. So, my first outside flight testing was less than impressive. After an hour of battery charging I only got five minutes of flight time! Not a very good fun to work ratio if you want my opinion.

After that first five minute outdoor flight the drone was quite warm to the touch when the battery ran low, that’s a first. Never seen another drone do that, and I have several of them. It’s only fair to give it another go, it might just surprise me. Well, I was right, it surprised me real good. Two minutes into my second outdoor flight I decided to try a simple flip stunt which the drone executed perfectly. The trouble was that immediately after the flip maneuver the drone began ascending into the early evening sky, and was no longer responding to my control inputs. It was well within the drones limited signal range, but just stopped responding. Unable to get the drone to respond, I was helpless to do anything other than watch my jetjat live-w disappear into the night sky as it kept rising and was taken by winds aloft. If you find it – keep it!

    ~~UPDATE: July 2, 16~~
I guess my reputation with the kids of cold canyon is some better than I thought because a few days after the drone flew away a couple teenagers brought it back to me, which is a really fortunate thing because MOTA finally sent me the controller they claimed did not exist. Too bad, cause I’ve long since lost interest in this sorry excuse for a FPV drone and moved on to one that works the way it’s supposed to. So I gave the kids the controller & told ’em to keep the drone with my best wishes.

I got what I wanted, and that was for MOTA to come clean and admit there IS a controller for this drone. If you still buy a jetjat after reading this, you should insist they send you a controller, because it flies a whole lot better with the controller than it does with the smart phone app. plus, it’s a very nice controller with an extending phone bracket for FPV viewing thru phone while you fly with the controller, just like in the picture. Too bad you gotta go tooth & nail with some companies just to get what you paid for.

Get a drone that uses a real controller, not an app., January 6, 2017

Even with the trim set all the way forward, the drone would fly backwards. Then, when I put the pitch all the way forward, along with the trim all the way forward, it would fly forwards A LITTLE.
In the little time I spent with this drone it became apparent that a real controller would be so much better than the app. You can’t tell where your fingers are on the app unless you constantly look down at them… but then you lose sight of the drone. Supposedly, this drone has a controller, but MOTA doesn’t eagerly want you to know that.

I contacted MOTA about the backwards flying, but they replied too late (It took 2 weeks for a reply); I had already returned the drone. Their response talked about a “controller”, but no controller came with the drone. I had to use my iPhone.

    Here’s their reply:

Thank you for contacting MOTA Customer Support.
I understand that you are having issues with your MOTA JetJat.
I certainly do apologize for any inconvenience that you may be experiencing.
I will gladly assist you with a few troubleshooting steps:
    1) Remove all batteries from the controller remote.
    2) Please make sure that all debris is free and clear from the propellers also check if your batteries might have leaked causing JetJat remote to not make contact with the batteries.
    3) With the batteries in the controller removed, turn the JetJat on and off 3 times this should hard reset the controller.
    4) Insert batteries back into the JetJat controller, then turn on.
    5) You should hear 2 beeps from the controller, then turn on your JetJat, now move the left joystick up and down this should pair the JetJat with the controller.
If the drone appears to not fly you may want to check the blade arrangement.
On the back side of the blades, you will see it marked with the number “1”or “2” Please refer to the diagram on the MOTA website for installation.
If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to reach out to our support team or reply back to this ticket at any time.
Have a wonderful day and thanks again for choosing MOTA.
